We’ve been talking about masks the last couple of weeks. Point being that wearing masks to hide who we really are can be destructive. Sometimes it can be difficult for us to expose our true selves. Equally challenging is knowing how to respond when others remove their masks. We have a natural tendency to judge others. We often forget the grace that was given to us by our heavenly father and loved ones. This week we are going to focus on how we ought to respond when the true faces of others are unveiled. Come and See!

NC-17 is the title of the sermon this week. We aren’t talking about inappropriate movies, (we can save that discussion for another time) instead we are going to be talking about the young adults in the Church. As we continue on in our series “The Importance of Every Age” we want to address some of the major concerns with the post-teen age group. 18 to 40 year olds are known for taking on major rolls in the Church, but sometimes pride kicks in and younger and older folks get excluded. We’ll be emphasizing what it means to live up to our responsibilities while walking in humility and grace. No matter what age group you fall into there is something for you. Come and See!

Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” Mathew 18:3

Children can often be our best teachers when it comes to following Christ. Kids offer such great examples of believing. Their faith isn’t shaken with every obstacle. They don’t stop believing when there is no proof. Children know what faith is all about. In our new series “The Importance of Every Age” we’ll be looking at what we can learn from different generations that will strengthen our walk with Jesus. This week is all about the kids. Come and See!

Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.” Luke 14:12-14

We are called to be hosts and to invite others to The Table. Jesus challenges us to not only invite those closest to us, but also those on the outside who may not be as easy to include. We need to always remember that God’s Kingdom is open to anyone and everyone who will except the invitation. Come and See as we continue our series on fellowship.

Have you ever read the Bible and been frustrated with the characters in the story? Often when I read about God’s people I get frustrated when I see how they turn away from Him. Reading from my perspective it is so obvious what they should do or how they ought to react. It bugs me because God’s presence seems so clear. One story in Exodus tells how the Israelites’, shortly after leaving Egypt, created a Golden Calf to worship. How ridiculous! God had time after time made His presence known and kept His promises and meanwhile His people turned away. But before I continue to give the Israelites a hard time I need to also look at the way I am living. I may not have built and worshiped an idol in the way they did, but what does the way I live my life say about the God I serve? Am I spending more time focusing on material things or even other relationships instead of investing in my relationship with God? This week we’ll dig a bit deeper into this significant story in Exodus. Come and See!

As the story goes in Exodus, God instructed the Israelites to build a portable Temple called the tabernacle. This worship tent had very precise specifications as it was the place where God dwelled with His people. Today we don’t need a tabernacle to be in the presence of God, because Jesus opened up a greater way to be in relationship with Him. But understanding the tabernacle and the things that it stood for gives us a better understanding of the God that we serve. Realizing the significance of the tabernacle helps us see why Jesus had to go through the things that He did for us. Come and See!

The Thou Shalls and Shall Not’s (aka the Ten Commandments) have become a widely misperceived part of the Bible. The law was never put in place as a punishment for the Israelites or to take away from their freedom. Proper practice of the law wasn’t something that God needed for Himself. Though He desired for His children to do right, whether the Israelites followed God or not didn’t change who He was. The law was designed for the benefit of God’s people. When we live according to God’s instruction our life is better and simpler. This week we will be expanding this discussion as we continue our journey through Exodus. Come and See!

James 1:23-24 says “Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in the mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.” That can’t possibly be us…could it? We have all been guilty at sometime or another of forgetting God’s word. It is especially easy to do so when we are in tough situations, frustrated, grieving, depressed and lacking peace. We have a little bit in common with the Israelites in the book of Exodus. It wasn’t too long after exiting Egypt that they began to forget what God had done for them. “How soon we forget” is the topic this week. You don’t want to miss it! Come and See!

“I will sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted. The horse and its rider he has hurled into the sea.” Exodus 15:1 There is a song that the Israelites sang to God after the miraculous crossing of the Red Sea, found in Exodus chapter 15. You may have read this passage and thought that the song is kind of strange or overly graphic and I agree. However this song has a lot to teach us. We may not know what it is like to have Egyptians chasing us as we cross dry ground that is supposed to be filled with millions of gallons of water, but there is symbolism that points us to an even greater redemption story. Maybe you are or were slaves to the world (instead of Egyptians), away from God (instead of the Promised Land) and separated by sin (instead of a sea). Good News…We have something better than Moses’ staff dividing the water and making a way for us. We have Jesus who is the way, the truth and the life. This week we have an opportunity to hear from a great teacher, encourager and my groomsman, Jacob Evers, as we continue our series through Exodus. Come and See!

The Bible is the story of God’s redemption for his people (Israel and us.) We believe that there is a whole lot that we can learn from the Old Testament just as we can from the New. Understanding the fulfillment of salvation through Jesus Christ gives us a key approach in interpreting God’s word from Genesis through Revelation. Jesus loved his mom. Even as he was facing death on the cross he made sure that she was in good hands. John 19:26-27 says “When Jesus saw his mother there and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, ‘Dear woman, here is your son,’ and to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’ From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.” As Christians we should imitate Jesus and his disciple in our love for our moms. This week is the perfect week to start doing that! Sunday is Mother’s Day, a beautiful day set aside to honor the women in our lives who have raised us up with love. We are going to take a fresh look at an overly criticized passage of scripture that just might have a thing or two to do about moms. Come and See!

“How awesome is the LORD Most High, the great King over all the earth!” Psalm 47:2 Do we believe that God has authority over all the earth? Does God own everything? We say that all things belong to Him. Does God reign over the church building more than He does our homes, schools, malls, places of work, hang out spots, etc.? I don’t think so.” Some places aren’t commonly recognized as areas where God reigns, but whether we see Him or not He is still there. I don’t believe that it is the building that makes a church holy. It is the presence of the lord that makes a place holy. If that is the case then we have no limits to where we can worship the Lord because He is where we are. This week we have an opportunity to hear from a great teacher, Joel Jeffers, as we focus in on the idea of Worshiping outside of Church. Come and See!

The Tomb is Empty! Christ is Risen! Easter Sunday is a wonderful day, because we intentionally highlight the significance that Jesus conquered death and sin. Easter is the day that we remember the fact that our Redeemer lives! This year we are going to be looking at a story in Luke where Jesus meets a pair of disciples on the road to Emmaus. It will be the final sermon in our series “Travelin’ Through.” I encourage you to read and reflect on the story in Luke 24:13-35 this week during devotional time before Sunday.

It seems like everyone is talking about money lately. Unemployment is high, cost of living keeps going up and up, and more things we “need” (but cannot afford) are being marketed at us constantly. Money is a big deal and there is no avoiding it. As Christians it is a good idea for us to examine how God wants us to live in every area of our life, including our finances. The bible says that “…the love of money is a root of all evil.” (1 Timothy 6:10) Too often that verse gets misused and people start to believe that “money is evil.” It’s not. It’s paper and metal. It’s what we do with it that matters. Come and see this week as we continue our series “Travelin through” and pastor Steve gives us some great insight on this topic.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 says “Pray continuously” (NIV), “Pray without Ceasing” (NKJV), “Never stop praying” (NLT) The apostle Paul was making sure he emphasized the importance of prayer in our lives. A short prayer before bedtime and dinner isn’t cutting it. God wants us to communicate with Him constantly. As we go throughout our day we should acknowledge Him, we should ask for His guidance, we should thank Him; we should request forgiveness and peace. God is our friend and we need to work to maintain that relationship. How can God be number one in our lives when we only go to Him when we need something? Prayer is a very big deal! We have to get better at this! You are welcome to come to Grace Point as we continue our series “Travelin’ Through” this week and dig into scripture that will focus on our need to pray.

“I will praise you, O Lord among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. For great is your love, higher than the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens, and let your glory be over all the earth.” Psalm 108:3-5

Throughout scripture God reveals to us His care not only for Jews and faithful followers, but for the whole world. God loves all of creation and He calls us to do the same. God desires a relationship with each of his children and He put Christians in charge of getting that message across to everyone. Mike Holland, a great teacher and experienced missionary, will be speaking to us this week at Grace Point as we continue our series “Travelin’ Through.” You don’t want to miss this!

I’ve worked in customer service roles at my jobs for a number of years. Each company taught us to put the customers first and to really give them a quality experience. The problem was that there were too many rules and procedures that got in the way. Certain systems that were built into my jobs took away from my main purpose of offering great service. This is similar to problems that we see in the church. Our purpose is to love everyone and spread God’s Kingdom, but too often we get caught up in the wrong focus. In the Gospels we see the religious leaders worrying more about the law, the Sabbath, and clean and unclean practices, than showing the love of God. Jesus was quick to correct them. This week we’ll be digging in and looking at “Kingdom Priorities.” We’ll look at some of the things that are most important to God as we continue our series, “Travelin’ Through.” Please come and see!

God has a purpose for everything. He is very intentional about his decisions and actions. Jesus, being God, of course demonstrates the same characteristics of the Father. If you already read Pastor Steve’s blog, you know that we will be starting our new series “Travelin’ Thru” this Sunday, which will highlight Jesus’ decent into Jerusalem and ultimately to the cross. This week the theme is “Getting focused.” Jesus knew why he was going to Jerusalem and what would take place for him. During the process he made sure to prepare his disciples (including us) to carry out the mission. Please join us this Sunday as we learn to “Get focused.”

We talk about forgiveness often in the church. We emphasize the fact that Jesus Christ forgives us of our sins when we repent and follow Him. Sometimes, however, we forget that we are supposed to extend that grace in our relationships. God calls us to take what He has given us and share it with the world. We should love others as He loves us. We should care for the poor and sick as He did during His ministry. We should forgive those who have wronged us. If we don’t we are hypocrites. Jesus says very bluntly in Mathew 6:14-15 “If you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” Please visit us this Sunday at Grace Point as we focus in on this idea of forgiveness and how it ties into a Fresh Start.

Many of us have been transformed by the renewing power of Jesus. The great thing is that Jesus is not just for us, but for the whole world. The problem is that the whole world doesn’t know the good news. We know about and have experienced the Fresh Start that comes with Jesus. We are continuing with the “Fresh Start” series at Grace Point. Over the last few weeks many of us have taken steps to move on from the things that have been holding us back and hindering our relationships. This week we will be looking at what happens when we fail. Too often we become overly critical of our failures, which isn’t healthy. Or we take the other extreme and take the “oh well,” “it doesn’t matter” approach. Hopefully we won’t experience much failure, but we are human, so it is a good idea to know how to handle it when it comes. Are there skeletons in your closet? Are there things in your life that you have kept hidden from God and/or the people closest to you? You are not alone if you answered “Yes.” Many of us have kept the junk in our life hidden. Unfortunately as painful as it is, it is necessary to confess these things and address them head on in order for a true Fresh Start to take place. God already knows our short comings. “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” Hebrews 4:13 God knows. We just need to be wiling to fess up. We cannot succeed in moving forward if there are things holding us back. It is encouraging to remember that Jesus died for All of our sins. He offers us grace. He offers forgiveness to things that appear unforgivable. He offers us a Fresh Start.

What if the church was a baggage drop off for our burdens? Jesus tells us in Mathew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Jesus is not talking about eggs when he uses the word “yoke.” Large animals like oxen would wear large beams on their shoulders called “yoke” to pull heavy loads. Jesus is using this as symbolism for the emotional and spiritual burdens we are dealing with. He tells us to bring them before Him, so we can find rest. God does not expect us to deal with life all on our own. Reflect on this passage and listen to the following songs that we will be singing this Sunday as you prepare your heart for worship.

This week we have a great opportunity to hear from a wonderful couple who spent over three years as missionaries in Nicaragua. Alan and Beth Claassen Thrush will be sharing about their journey as they teach through Mary’s story in the first chapter of Luke. You won’t want to miss this! Following are the songs that we will be singing this week. Keep reading and prepare your heart for the upcoming worship service.

•Hosanna. Alan and Beth will be touching on the subject of hope. Hosanna is a song of hope. It is a prayer that God will rescue us.

•Here is Our King. When we worship the Lord we are in His presence. We are standing at the feet of our God who has “come to bring us back to Him.”

•Enough. God’s Love is more than enough to satisfy us. I love the words in this verse: Isaiah 58:11 “The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.”

•Came to my Rescue. When we call He will answer. He will give us what we need in times of trouble.

•Walk by Faith. God calls us to trust Him even when we don’t see. Sometimes life is scary and it is quite often unpredictable, but God gives us what we need. We can find comfort in knowing that He is always with us.

Are you the same person at home as you are at church? What about at work or with your non-Christian friends? Let’s be honest. It is easy to worship God and act like a follower of Christ on Sunday mornings, but I can bet that all of us struggle with the rest of the week. Regardless of how difficult it is, we are called to follow Jesus in every area of our life. Come and see how we can live more fully for Christ as pastor Steve teaches us about “Blurring the Line.” Keep reading to prepare your heart for the worship service this upcoming Sunday.

• Your Name High. Jesus gave His life for us at the Cross. In response we choose to give our life to Him. Not by dying, but by living in a way that honors Him. We are living to make His name high.

• Glory to God. “Ascribe to the Lord, O mighty ones; ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.” Psalm 29:1-2

• The Stand. Our God is incredible. We cannot begin to comprehend His greatness. Never the less we come together to worship Him in awe of his love and power.

• Unashamed Love. We need to live proud of the God we serve. God is our friend! God loves you and me! What can top that? Who cares if other people look down on us? We’ve got God on our side.

• Lifesong. In everything we do let our words and actions point to God.

Charles Dickens wrote one of the most well known Christmas stories of all time, “A Christmas Carol.” The story has been turned into dozens of plays and films. Even Mickey Mouse and Kermit the frog have starred in their own versions. The reason I bring this up is because we are continuing our series “Christmas at the movies” at Grace Point. We’ll be looking at a few clips from ”A Christmas Carol” to see what ideas point to the first Christmas and the birth or our savior. Come and see a new perspective from a classic story. I included some videos of the songs for this upcoming service, so you can begin preparing your hearts for worship.

•I’m Not Ashamed. The word “gospel” means “good news.” We can’t keep good news to ourselves. We need to share. We need to tell the world.

•Your Love Never Fails. Nothing can separate us from the love of God. His love is unconditional, it is powerful and it is unchanging. His love offers us a second, third, forth, hundredth, thousandth, etc. chance.

•God with Us. The word “Immanuel” that we hear frequently during the Christmas season, means “God with Us.” Christmas is about God coming to earth. He lived a life as a human to draw us to Him and rescue us from sin. And he defeated death through his resurrection so He could demonstrate His power and remain with Us.

•Glory to God. All praise and glory are for God. Everything we have to be thankful for can be credited back to Him.

•O Come All Ye Faithful. We are called to gather and to be reminded of what our God has done. And we respond with adoration. Sorry no video for this one!

“How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is playing this week. It’s all part of the “Christmas at the Movies” series at Grace Point. Come and See how some of the scenes from the movie point us to the true Christmas story. See who in Whoville reminds us who our God is.

•Glory to God Forever. The Christmas Story in Luke 2 paints a beautiful seen when the angels come to worship baby Jesus. “Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.” We continue the praise that the angels said long ago. “Glory to God Forever”

•Let God Arise. Giving gifts, getting together with family and friends, and being merry are great things. But Christmas is not about those things. Christmas is about celebrating Christ’s birth. Christmas is about praising God for coming to earth to save us.

•You Never Let Go. A young girl in the movie, Cindy Lou Who, never gives up on the Grinch. She knows that there is a little good left in him and that no one is too far to be saved. Jesus died for the whole world. There is no one on earth that is too far from God to be saved. No one! Our God never lets go.

•From the Inside Out. We can all be like the Grinch at times. Like him we need to be transformed from the inside out. God will help us do that.

•Go Tell it On the Mountain. We cannot keep this news to ourselves. We have a responsibility to share the love of God to the World. The mountain tops are only the start. Sorry no video for this song. You’ll have to come this Sunday for a little twist on the traditional tune

We’re going to have a blast with the “Christmas at the Movies” series these next few weeks at Grace Point. This Sunday we’ll be starting things off with the classic film, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” The movie is a bit old, but the major themes are more relevant than ever. Don’t worry if you haven’t seen the movie before. You won’t be lost! Or if you’ve seen it a thousand times or have watched it and hated it, come and see it with a new perspective!

• Everything Glorious. There is a character in the film who feels like the world would be better without him. Many of us have had times when we’ve felt this way. It is important to know that God does not see us as insignificant beings. He sees us as His Glorious, valuable children.

• Hosanna. The Christmas season is all about HOPE and this movie does a great job highlighting this theme. The term “Hosanna” is our hopeful shout for God to save us.

• Enough. The setting of the movie is in a small town during the Great Depression. Money was tight. And many of us today are facing similar feeling as we deal with skyrocketing unemployment, salary decreases, cut backs etc. When we don’t have much we tend to start realizing what is really important in life and what we really Need. God provides. He is enough for us.

• Mighty to Save. Hope is a lot easier when we realize that we serve a loving God with the power to move mountains and oh so much more.

• Joy to the World. Each of us is different, but we all deal with junk in our life. However, Life really is Wonderful thanks to Jesus Christ, our Joy. Sorry no video for this song. You’ll have to come this Sunday for a little twist on the traditional tune

Sunday Worship, November 22nd

This Sunday we will be in the Book of Philemon, a beautiful letter from the apostle Paul. I encourage you to read the short passage (25 verses total) this week. There are many great themes in it, but our spotlight for the service will be on Slavery. Pastor Steve will take us through different ideas of what that encompasses, but for the sake of worship our focus will be on our freedom in Christ. Jesus died so that we no longer have to be slaves to sin. And for that we celebrate!

• Hosanna. The expression is a plea for God to save us and a recognition that He will.

• Salvation is Here. We confess that Jesus is our Lord and Savior. There is nothing in our life too big for God.

• Shout Unto God. Satan has been defeated. The devil no longer has a hold on us. Christ has triumphed and made it possible to live a righteous life away from sin.

• Beautiful the Blood. We reflect on the amazing sacrifice God went through to be with us.

• Majesty. We live in Awe with the understanding that God Loves Us.

God was very intentional with His design of the Church. He created us to work with one another, because we are stronger collectively than we are as individuals. This week we are continuing our series “Moving Forward Together” and the focus is on the importance of TOGETHER. Jesus prayed for unity in the church, so we are taking steps forward and trusting in the Lord for this to take place.

• Our Love is Loud. The words are simple. Let’s allow love to shine through every area of our life. It is much easier to move forward TOGETHER when love connects us.

• Everything Glorious. If God views us as Glorious then we should see ourselves and others in the same light. It isn’t easy, but with God’s help we could learn to make this our response.

• Give us Clean Hands. So quickly sin distracts us from our purpose. Let this song be our prayer that we could be a generation that seeks the Lord.

• How Great is Our God. Let us worship together in awe of the God who unites us.

• Not to Us. Moving Forward Together is a blessing to each of us, but we don’t work at this for self praise. It’s all about bringing Glory to God. Not to us, but to His Name be the Glory.

This Sunday we are continuing our series “Moving Forward Together.” The focus this week is on what it means to push “Forward” in our relationship with Christ and “Forward” in our representation of Him to the world. As always the song choices are very intentional for pointing us toward this theme in our worship service.

Here is Our King. If we want to move forward we need to make sure we know who we are following… Jesus Christ, the “King of kings and Lord of lords”

Your Love Never Fails. Our God has demonstrated countless times an unfailing Love for us. We need to accept that. And we need to take that a step further and live out that love for all the world to see.

Saviour King. This song testifies to the power of God that is alive in us. It makes challenges a little more approachable when we know that God is here.
